Overnight Palmwine
In Africa, Palmwine is highly regarded, appreciated and honored. It is a beverage that is nonalcoholic, sweet and creamy when tapped. It starts getting alcoholic after about two hours as it ferments. The longer it stays the higher the alcoholic level and also the sourer it becomes; this is referred as “Overnight” in some Nigerian cultures. Overnight Palmwine therefore means the strong, sour and fermented Palmwine that has stayed for days. This is usually the case in bars where it is expected that you have fresh and fermented Palmwine because while some like the fresh ones, others like the overnight ones while some others want blend of both.
In my Igbo Culture for example, special importance is attached to a full Palmwine keg that is handed from the tapper to someone as he climbs down from the tree without it being put down. It is called “Mmanya Ike Erughi Ala” (which literally means Drink whose bottom has not touched ground). Such can be sold many times the original value. This is because it is expected and suppose not to have been diluted. Hardly does any tapper sell Palmwine without diluting it with water hence the special attribute to Mmanya Ike Erughi Ala. Also when we were small, we were made to believe that Palmwine sours faster when the keg is placed on the floor. Till date I still observe that principle. Mmanya Ike Erughi Ala is also believed to be good breastfeeding mothers. It is said to boost their milk production both in quality and quantity.
Overnight Palmwine is not much sought after. Also, females and children do not like it. When Palmwine is requested during events like weddings or required during rites like Traditional Marriages, what is expected is Fresh Palmwine. Those present drink it then fresh while the remaining ones and some reserves kept for key people that were unavoidably absent are still taken days after by which time they are overnight.
Overnight Palmwine therefore is a natural transformation of the fresh ,sweet none alcoholic Palmwine into a sour, strong, alcoholic state simply by it being fermented.

Our African Culture, Our African Heritage
Africa is rich in culture and cultural values. This can be expressed in their languages, names, games, religion, modes of dressing, hair styles, ceremonies, festivals, music, masquerades, dances, foods, etc.
Unfortunately, most of these are fading away, dying and some dead. Reawakening these have become a herculean task and a challenge that is not only necessary but inevitable.
Our African culture has mostly been oral: passed on through story telling, folklores and other oral traditions. There are also symbols and signs that pass our cultures and traditions from one generation to another like the clay, kola nuts, palm fronts, Palm wine etc. These are all forms of communication systems and represent different things in different situations. I will enumerate on these in subsequent posts
Suffice it to say that African cultures and cultural values are not only unique but rich in communication. It is a heritage that is worth sustaining for diversity in the world order.
Rotary Fellowship of Palmwine has for six years positioned itself in promoting these through the wide network of Rotary International. We hope to attract like minds in this task. The African way we shall be doing this with lots of fun and fanfare as those are ingredients of African culture.

Can palms beer enhance milk production?
Can palm wine boost the production of breastmilk? Check out the article below. See this local “prescription” for low breast milk production that I discovered on Facebook.
There is a popular cultural idea that consuming palmwine (Pammy) can truly enhance milk production, especially for mothers who do not produce “enough milk” after giving birth.
Prolactin and oxytocin hormones, as well as the baby sucking on the breasts, influence the release of breast milk (let down). While oxytocin promotes contraction of the smooth muscles surrounding the mammary tissue, triggering the ejection of milk stored in the breast, prolactin stimulates female mammary glands to produce breast milk (milk let down).
